Heh, sorry about the silly title, but I am very happy right now. I entered a friend of mines contest over on DeviantArt, with this piece, and the closing date was 31st October. Now I never expected to win anything, but I came second! I have never won anything like this before, so I am pretty damn happy!

Works not picked up yet, we are getting barely any calls, last night I didn’t have any calls between 7.30 and 10pm which is when I finished. I guess being paid to do nothing isn’t that bad, but its so boring, time really drags. I ended up reading a book, World War Z (more on that later), even though we arn’t meant to do it, the manager on duty said it was fine, there is no point in doing nothing just in case, something is obviously wrong even if the people dealing with call routing are claiming there isn’t. I hope its better today, the whole thing is putting me in a really bad freaking mood.

Anyway, on to the book I was reading.. World War Z by Max Brooks.

World War Z

Yes, its a book about zombies, which may make people think of things like thwe old 50’s B movies and the more recent gore fests like Dawn of the Dead and Resident Evil. But this book is totally different. Written in the form of eye-witness accounts gathered by someone writing a report on the Zombie War ten years after the event, the book is horrifying in its realism. You would honestly believe the dead could walk, that the events described in sometime heartbreaking detail are that well written. Rather than a supernatural event, the zombies are the result of a virus that infects its host and turns them into the walking dead in an alarmingly short period of time. Again, its so well written and done in such detail you don’t find the virus that implausable to believe in. The book is gory, I wont deny that, but its not done in a way meant to shock the reader, or give a cheap thrill. Battles against the undead are grim, unglamorous affairs, you can feel the horror of the poor soliders that don’t realise exactly what they are up against until its too late.

I am about half way through the book right now, I have just started the section titled “Turning the Tide”. Without wanting to spoil the book for anyone who wants to read the book (and I recommend that you do), the manner in which the author is handling the difficult subject of necessary sacrifice is wondeful. You don’t sit there thinking “Those bastards” over someone making the tough decisions that had to be made in the war against the seemingly unstoppable undead, you think “How awful for them” as its clear that really its the only way to save humanity.

Not a book to read if you are on a downer, nor if you are weak of stomach, but if you want to read a ‘grown up’ horror novel, then I’d highly recommend this one.

Oh, I also bought the Zombie Survival Guide by the same author, which got me some odd looks at work when I was readign it :)

Feeling better now.

Ok, so after my little drama day on Wednesday I now feel a lot better.  Yesterday went a lot better at work, got 8 sales, but best of all, I dealt with an ‘escalation’ complaint.  Let me explain.  If a person wants to make a complaint, there isn’t a specific department, instead they are put through to the correct department and they are told to tell the advisor they wish to escalate their complaint.  That advisor HAS to deal with the complaint, either themselves, or pass it on to their line manager.  Its all very strict when it comes down to it (and rightly so).  So yesterday I got a call from a rather angry man, who wanted to purchase a piece of equipment that he had seen on a leaflet we sent out cost £49.99, yet when he tried to order it he had been told it was £79.99.  So after the all important account validation (gotta make sure the guy was who he said he was of course), I took a look at his account, and went to the order screen to see what it said about this item.  Sure enough, it seemed to tell me the item was £79.99, so I went and got my manager, as I doubt the guy would be happy with that answer.  But ha!  There WAS an option to sell the phone for £49.99, it just wasn’t obvious that was the option you chose.  So thats why the previous advisor had quoted him the wrong price.  So I tell the nice man who is fuming on the other end of the phone that I can sell him the phone for £49.99 after all.  Happy days!  The guy is thrilled, I sell him the phone for the agreed price, and he doesn’t want to complain to my manager anymore!  The guys loves me :)   And as the other manager was listening in to the call as I dealt with it, I may well get a reward for my good work.  I just hope its not the usual 6 pack of larger… ><  Wine would go down well (though knowing my luck it would be red wine).  Also, my direct manager was actually sympathetic about the previous day, he told me not to worry about the bad sales, the training took up a lot of the day and he could tell I wasn’t feeling too good.  Awwww, for a guy he can be quite nice.   Though when I told him it had been “Womens issues” he took a bigggg step back and asked if chocolate could be used to ward me off in event of an emergency :P

So all in all it was a lot better day :)

The Kindness of Strangers

There are days when I can’t stand humanity as a whole.  People treat you like crap because you dont wear the smae brand of clothing as them, or like the same music, or a multitude of pathetic other reasons that shouldn’t matter but for some reason do.

And then there are days like today, when a girl I have talked to over at DeviantArt sent me four items of jewelry she had made for free, a random gift.  And its beautiful stuff…

Rootbeer Float Bracelet
CreamSoda Bracelet
Peaches and Cream Bracelet
The Whole Shebang Earings

Arn’t they gorgeous!  I have such a hard time deciding which one to wear (all three at once is a little bit too much :) ).  And all for being a ‘great person’.  I feel warm and fuzzy inside! :)

Jackie makes loads of great stuff, and its all for sale, so I’d really recommend going and seeing what she has to offer, her prices are reasonable.

So, what to do her in return…  So far I have posted some stuff out for her in the UK as it turned out it was cheaper to send it all to me and I post the rest, saved her over $25.  Its the least I could do.

Anyway, this will have me smiling the rest of the day :)
